Cervical Spine Anatomy

A graphic shows different segments of the spine and neck. Jose Mena, Interventional Spine Specialist at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, says most of the time patients complain about having trapezius pain or over the neck pain.

The specialist explains what the most common source of pain are using a graphic. Neck pain and headaches are caused by problems in the areas marked in the imaging.

MRI or CT scan are very useful for making a diagnosis and addressing therapy afterwards.

WE HAVE A 3-D IMAGE OF PAIN SPOTS, AND YOU ALL WILL RECOGNIZE THIS. TELL US ABOUT THOSE C2’S. C6. THE C’S. > WE ARE LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF THE SPINE AND NECK. MOST OF THE TIME, PATIENTS COMPLAIN OF HAVING TRAPEZIUS PAIN OR OVER THE NECK PAIN. THAT IS THE MOST COMMON LEVEL PEOPLE DEVELOP ARTHRITIS OF THE NECK, IN THE TRAP AREA. MASSAGES, ETC. ESSENTIALLY, WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH HERE IS LIKELY C5 AND C6 PAIN, FOLLOWED BY C7 IN THE SHOULDER BLADE AREA, THE SECOND MOST COMMON SOURCE. THE MOST COMMON SOURCE OF HEADACHES AND OVER NECK PAIN ARE THE C2C’S, THE AREAS ON THE BACK OF THE HEAD. WHENEVER WE ARE SEEING SOMEONE IN THE CLINIC COMPLAINING ABOUT PAIN IN A SPECIFIC AREA, AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY MIGHT OVERLAP. BUT WE SEE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS THERE DEALING WITH. WHICH JOINTS TO LOOK AT BETTER AND THE MRI OR CT SCAN. > IS THERE AN AREA THAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT TO TREAT, OR ARE THEY ALL COMPARABLE? > THEY ARE MOSTLY THE SAME WHEN IT COMES TO TREATMENT. C65 AND C67 REQUIRE A NEEDLE TO GET INTO THE JOINTS. THE ONE WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT, AND IT’S NOT HERE, THE C1 AND C2. I SHOW IT IN THE MODEL, THERE’S AN ARTERY BEHIND. WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO PUT THE NEEDLE IN THE ARTERY, BUT IN THE JOINT. > WHEN I SAY I HAVE A STIFF NECK, WHERE DOES THAT APPEARED? > IT DEPENDS. IT CAN BE C2, C3. OR C4, C5. IT DEPENDS.
